About image compression
Large images are the single biggest reason web pages load slowly. A typical photo straight out of a phone camera is between 3 and 12 MB, while the same image displayed on a website rarely needs to be more than 200–400 KB. Compressing before you upload cuts page weight dramatically, improves Core Web Vitals, and saves storage and bandwidth.
Lossy vs lossless
JPG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard image data the human eye is unlikely to notice. That's why they get so small. PNG is lossless — it keeps every pixel exactly, so it can't shrink nearly as much, but it supports transparency and is the right choice for logos, icons and screenshots with sharp edges.
Which quality setting should I use?
For photographs, 75–85% is almost always the right answer — the file gets several times smaller while remaining indistinguishable from the original at normal viewing size. Below 60% you start to see blocky artefacts in smooth areas like skies and skin. For images with text or fine lines, stay above 85% or switch to PNG.
Should I convert to WebP?
If the images are going on a website, yes. WebP typically produces files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality, and it's supported by every current browser. Keep JPG when the file has to work in older software, email clients or print workflows.
Resizing beats compressing
If your image is 4000 px wide but will be displayed at 800 px, no quality setting will save you as much as simply scaling it down. Set a max width that matches how the image is actually used — that alone often removes 90% of the file size before compression even starts.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files are never transmitted, stored or seen by anyone, and they disappear from memory as soon as you close the tab.
Is there a file size or file count limit?
There is no artificial limit. The only practical constraint is your device's memory, since everything is processed locally. Very large batches of high-resolution images may take a few seconds each.
Will compression reduce the quality of my photo?
At the default 80% setting the difference is invisible at normal viewing size for almost all photographs. Lower settings trade more visible quality for a smaller file. PNG output is lossless and loses nothing.
Which formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP as input. You can export as JPG, PNG or WebP. HEIC files from iPhones are not supported by browsers directly — convert them to JPG first.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded, you can disconnect from the internet and it will keep working, because no server is involved in the processing.
Do you add a watermark?
Never. The output is your image, compressed — nothing is added to it and no metadata about this site is embedded.
